Life
From 1954 to 1960 he studied Islamic Studies in Frankfurt am Main, Ankara, Bonn and Göttingen (Dr. phil. on December 14, 1960). From 1965 to 1969 he was an assistant at the Seminar for Arabic Studies in Göttingen. After his habilitation in 1968, he was a full professor at the University of Bern from 1970 to 1995.
